A Brief Analysis of Difficulties in Conducting CLT in the Middle School
Introduction
English is widely used throughout the world, and the English language has been an international communicational language. Many countries set up the course of English as the second language or foreign language at school in order to keep up with international step. So does China. China has set the course of English for many years, and the English is regarded as a main course in the middle school in China. However, the traditional teaching methods pay less attention to communication, which the exchanges of world economy, politics and culture, to a large extent, depend upon among people from different parts of the world. So we begin to bring the communicative language teaching method into the middle school class in order to train students’ communicative competence. It is because the CLT emphasizes the importance of communication.
Nowadays communicative approach that is also named notional-functional approach has received considerable attention, and it is widely conducted in English teaching. The communicative language teaching has a formal definition that “an foreign or second language teaching approach which emphasizes that the goal of language teaching is communicative competence” (Richard, J.C, 2000: 56)according to Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics. Conducting of CLT in English teaching aims to help the students acquire not just language knowledge but communicative competence. “The communicative competence, as we envisage it, is made up of three component parts: linguistic competence, pragmatic competence and cognitive and affective capacity.” (Li Xiaoju, 1988: 2) “Linguistic competence refers to the mastering of basic knowledge such as lexicon, sentence structure, grammar at the level of discourse.” (Li Xiaoju, 1988: 2) Pragmatic competence accounts for the use of the language, and cognitive and affective capacity means that language is not just words
