* * * * Most recent research studies by industry analysts including Gartner, EDUCAUSE, ECAR and The Campus Computing Project show network security as the number one challenge/issue for education Part of this problem is that in many higher education institutions, Central IT does not have total control of all the networks and data in an institution. So at the University of Michigan, for example, each of the 19 colleges and many of the research- and resource-intensive departments have their own IT organization. So it is difficult to lock down and secure such a dispersed and disparate system of networks. The personnel shortage is particularly a problem with IT because education typically cannot pay as well as the private sector—also, most of the IT leaders now in education (Gartner thinks about 50-60 percent) are baby boomers who will soon retire, and there won’t be enough IT talent these institutions can attract. Over the last 10 years, and for the first time in the history of education, institutions are competing globally for students and faculty and having to deal with issues of retention. CSU for example did a study that showed there is a direct corollary between time to graduation and retention. So both recruiting and retention are important for an institution’s success. Wireless network access plays an important role in that. A big revenue stream was lost when students switched from land line phones (rented to them in their residence halls by the university) to cellular. They are looking for ways to replace that revenue or further drive down IT costs for delivering access to students. As laptop prices have dropped and students bring to campus not one but sometimes 3 or more wireless devices, institutions face two issues: how to manage the demand for capacity and coverage and how to protect and secure the network from viruses and unauthorized access. Finally, sadly, safety of students, faculty, and staff has again become a focus of concern. Many are looking f
