T he re- search w as based on the analysis o f ant itype observation, m obile bed m odel expermi ent and m athem atica l m ode.l The m ean ing, characteristic factors and d iscrmi inat ing factors o f the channe l shrinkage are also set fo rw ard in th is paper. T he research ind icates that the basic cau se of the river channel shrinkage is the comb ined act ion o f runo ff and sedmi en t variations and channel border effect. T he variance of m a in river channel s area of overflow cross-sec- t ion, variance of w ater level at the sam e flow quantity, average e levation rate of the riverbed and sect ion aspect can be regarded as characteristic factors.
