Analysis of The Shakers’ Influence on Robert in A Day No Pigs Would Die

Analysis of The Shakers’ Influence on Robert in A Day No Pigs Would Die 【Abstract】A Day No Pigs Would Die is Robert Newton Pecks semi-autobiographical tale of a boy’s struggle with adolescence and the responsibility of manhood. Peck’s parents were farmers and members of the Shaker church, and they taught Peck the Shaker Way. The Shaker religion plays a large part in Peck’s writing, and the mood of many Shaker tenets permeates through the novel. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the hero Robert how to form a healthy and positive life attitude under the influence of his father, Haven Peck, who believes in the shakers. 中国论文网 /8/view-7166467.htm 【Keywords】The Shakers;Religious influence;Life attitude The novel is set on a Vermont farm in the mid to late 1930s, mirroring Peck’s own childhood. Pecks parents taught him the Shaker way. The Shakers is a religious sect. They are known for their simple living, architecture and furniture. This paper would like to analyze the influence of the Shakers on Roberts view on life from three aspects. Firstly, Haven Peck, as a religious Shakers, advocates self-sufficiency without any desires. He educates Robert that he should pay attention to spirit rather than material, for the former can infect the world while the latter can only bring much more troubles to oneself. “Nothing but self-sufficiency” is the spirit that the Shakers most advocate, and it is also the core of their spirit. The background of the novel is set in the 1920s, when the U.S. economy developed at a rapid speed. It is in such a period when money is supreme while the spirit is weak that his father clung to his own belief and taught Robert the most important lesson in life. When his father explained to him that he couldn?t vote because he couldn?t read or write, Robert asked whether he felt heartsick, he answered:” No. I take what I am. We are Plain People, your mother and aunt, and your sisters, you and me. We live the Book of Shaker ... I am not hearts
