Especially for the much fluctuant lands, accurate, fast and precise calculation of earthwork calculation has very important significance for making the reasonable arrangement of the project schedule, the calculation of engineering quantity and investment budget. This paper is based on the excavation and backfilling earthwork calculation within the township of The overall planning of Xincheng town in Dawu county, uses the software platform of ArcGIS, the triangulated irregular network (TIN) of the studied area was used to establish the original and planned ground digital elevation model (DEM), then uses the surface difference analysis function of ArcGIS in the earthwork calculation. The results show that the application of ArcGIS in calculating earthwork, has the advantages of simple operation, calculation precision, and three–demon-signal visualization, and other advantages. It has important impact in conducting the development and construction of projects.
