An Analysis of Nancy in Oliver Twist
[Abstract]: Oliver Twist is one of the most famous novels of Charles Dickens. It describes the miserable life of an orphan and exposes many social problems at that time. It shows us those who live at the bottom of the society. Nancy, a very complex character in Oliver Twist, is regarded as the most attractive and successful role in the novel because of her double personality. This article will begin with the definition and development of critical realism, and then focus on analyzing Nancy’s character and why her double character is formed.

1. The Review of Critical Realism
In mid and late 19th century appeared a new literary trend—critical realism because the Industrial Revolution had intensified the contradictions between the capitalist system and the proletariat. It flourished in the forties and in the early fifties. The critical realists described the chief traits of the English society with much vividness and great artistic skill and criticized the capitalist system. Their works expose the darkness of the society, thus, from most of these works we can feel a strong tendency of pessimism.
One of the most famous English critical realists at the time was Charles Dickens. He wrote the novel Oliver Twist which reflects the tortuous life of an orphan and mirrors the miseries people living in
