Major factors leading to Higher Energy Costs are: Higher electrical Rate per KWhr from the Utility Company Lower Fan Efficiency Higher Air Flow needs Higher Fan Runtime Higher Filter pressure-drop (higher flow resistance) * This slide focuses on the energy cost component from higher pressure-drop of HVAC air filter. With all other conditions being the same, Pressure Drop is higher: 1) For Filters with Higher Filtration Efficiency 2) For Filters with less surface area 3) For “Mechanical” compared to “Electret” 4) For Filter-frames occupying more flow-area This chart shows for a given set of conditions, how increase in filter pressure-drop leads to higher energy costs. This chart is a quick reference guide for Sales personnel to estimate potential energy savings by replacing a higher pressure drop filter with a lower pressure drop filter. As a rule of thumb, if the difference in pressure-drop of two filters is 0.5”, then for $0.15/KWhr energy rate, the saving in energy from using the lower pressure-drop is $110.
