MOVING/DEFORMING MESH FOR NON-AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS IN FLUENT 6.0 Evangelos K. Koutsavdis, Ph.D. Fluent Inc. Lebanon, NH 03766. Ekk@ AGENDA Overview of Moving/Deforming Mesh (MDM) capabilities Zonal Motion Specification In Depth Look UDF writing for MDM Examples Concluding Remarks QA OVERVIEW OF MDM Mesh Motion Strategies in Fluent 6.x Fluent 6.0 offers three modes of mesh deformation Spring analogy Local remeshing Dynamic layering MDM problems generally complex; multiple strategies may be necessary. Mesh Motion Strategies in Fluent 6.x User can localize mesh motion by specifying the zones for which he/she wants to use dynamic grid. Mesh motion in various zones may use different strategies Connectivity between adjacent deforming zones may be non-conformal interface may deform Spring Analogy Prescribed boundary motion Interior nodes behave like a spring or ‘sponge’ node smoothing: node position depends on neighboring nodes (iterative process) Connectivity information remains unchanged Limited to relatively small deformation when used as a stand-alone scheme Applicable to boundary and volume meshes. Currently implemented for tri/tet meshes only Spring Analogy-Example Layering Description Useful for linear motion extrusion approach (rectilinear直线的) cells are added/deleted as region grows/shrinks as layers are added/deleted, connectivity changes Applications: pistons, valves Applicable to volume and boundary mesh Available for quad, hex and prism elements Layering-Example Layering Limitations Pure rectilinear extrusion Will generate skewed cells if face normal not aligned with extrusion direction inapplicable for excessive curvature Currently no projection of layer side onto geometry layer side must be cylindrical (linear for 2D) Combination of Approaches Layering in one region Spring analogy and remeshing. Deforming boundary zones non-conformal interface wall Global Controls Define Dynamic Mesh Parameters Methods toggle spring, layering, remeshing approache
