K-Chinese Literature: General Sources A. General Works and Handbooks Zhang Junyan 張君炎. Zhongguo wenxue wenxian xue 中國文學文獻學. Nanchang: Jiangxi renmin chubanshe, 1986. This is an introduction to the major sources for the study of pre-modern Chinese literature. It contains a brief survey of the major genres of the pre-modern period and the various forms in which literature was transmitted (i.e., in general collections, individual collections, congshu, etc.) followed by a chapter on the printing of literary works from the Song through the Qing dynasty. The book also includes chapters on the traditional catalogue and its use as a source for the study of literature, book editing and the study of textual authenticity, and commentaries on literary works and their format. Most of the handbook is devoted to providing bibliographical notes on the major genres of classical literature: poetry, prose, fiction, drama, and literary criticism. The final chapter concerns basic reference works such as dictionaries of literary terms, genres, and writers; nianpu and biographies; glossaries of terms that appear in literary works; handbooks on prosody; leishu as a source for the study of literature; catalogues of editions; indexes. It includes an introduction to catalogues of literary works, a brief history of the printing of literary collections and vernacular literature, a survey of the most important pre-modern catalogues that are especially useful for the study of Chinese literature, general catalogues and indexes of books and scholarly articles on Chinese literature, bibliographies of general anthologies and collections of individual writers, bibliographies of works on literary criticism, bibliographies on poetry, fiction, drama, and popular literature.
