Lesson Three Talking about hobbies I. Teaching objectives: to use ordinal numbers: 1st 20th to talk about hobbies II. Language focus and difficult points Words and expressions: From the text: a waste of time, enrich one’s knowledge, take up From the reading: prize winner , interview, the secret of (one’s ) success, keep healthy, be sound in health, broaden one’s mind III. Language Highlights: ordinal numbers (1 ) What’s your hobby? I like playing computer games. When did you take up your hobby? IV. Functions Talking about hobbies V. Teaching aids: Student books, Workbook, a tape, some pictures, slides VI. Time allocations: Five periods. The First Period Teaching Content: vocabulary , discovering language Procedure: I. Warming up: 1. An English song. 2. Daily talk. A game: Let a student do an action, the other students guess the phrase. (eg: 让一个学生做踢足球的动作, 其他学生猜, 如有学生猜出是play football, 该生所在小组即得分。) (Purpose:在于激发学生对接下去所学hobby中涉及到的动作的兴趣,并引出新单词。) Discovering Language 1. Let some students line up in front of the blackboard, and then have them say out their numbers one by one . 2. Make up dialogues. Model: T: What’s your number? S1: Ten. T: Are you the ninth student in this queue? S1: No I’m the tenth one. 3. Read the numbers and notice the spelling. (TB : P61) 4. Answer the questions . (YB: P62) 5. A game: Finding a Partner (Preparation: Prepare some cards with the cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers from 1 to 20 on ) …… 1). Divide the students into two groups. Give each of your students one card. Have the students go around their big group and find the partner, for example, the student who has the “one” should find the partner “first”; “two” to “second”;… Give your students one minute to find their partners and then, say, “Stop”. 2).
