haUnit One Section A – Time-Conscious Americans Introduction (Lead-in) Text Organization Information in detail – questions to discuss and present Vocabulary Summary Introduction: Time is precious. Many people have a very strong feeling that life is short and once time has passed it will not return. Many Americans believe if one is not moving ahead, he is falling behind. So everyone in America is in a rush --- often under pressure. They want every minute to be put into use. They value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting “ it beyond a certain appropriate point. Let’s see how Americans attach great importance to time and how American culture is different from other cultures in their treatment of time. Text organization: Part I (Para.1-2): Introduction: Americans treasure two elements: time and labor. Paragraph 1 – Questions Q1 – Describe the Americans as a nation. Q2 – What are the key points saved by Americans? (S4)Why? Q3 – What attitude results in a nation of American people? (The attitude is that if one is not moving ahead , he is falling behind ) Q4 – What does this attitude cause Americans to do? ( devote their time and energy to researching ,experimenting and exploring .) -Expressions 1. S1’s meaning: Americans believe no one keeps motionless; everyone moves. *Here stand means keep or stay in a particular position or state. In this sense, stand is followed by adjectives. e.g. The room stands idle. 这房间闲置着Stand firm—dont let them tell you what to do.要坚定,不要让他们对你指手画脚 They stand opposed to the new law. 他们反对这项新法律 2. S2: fall behind e.g. fall behind in science在科学方面落后fall behind one’s competitors落后于竞争对手 (Ex.) fall back 后退; 违约, 食言fall below降到…水平之下fall down跌倒; 倒塌fall on deaf ears完全忽视 3. S3’s meaning: This way of thinking and doing things causes Americans to devote their time and energy to researching, experimenting and exploring. result in-cause造成e.g. The accident resulted in his death. 这一车祸造成他的死亡。 result from-be caused by由...而造成e.g. Nothing has r
