CH12 Lubricating and Cooling Systems(1st Canadian)

Lubricating and Cooling Systems Objectives Name and describe the components of a typical lubricating system. Explain engine oil properties and types. Explain oil service and viscosity ratings. Inspect, measure, and service an oil pump. Explain the purpose and operation of an oil filter and describe engine oil and filter change procedures. Describe the propose of a crankcase ventilation system. Objectives List and describe the major components of the cooling system. Describe the operation of the cooling system. Describe the function of the water pump, radiator, radiator cap, thermostat, water jackets, block heaters and cooling fans in the cooling system. Test and service the cooling system. Lubricating System Components Engine oil Oil pump Oil pump pickup Oil pan or sump Pressure relief valve Oil filter Engine oil passages or galleries Engine bearings Oil pressure indicator Oil seals and gaskets Dipstick Oil cooler Types of Engine Oils Mineral based oil is refined from crude oil taken from the ground. This refined oil is specially formulated with additives to provide the required properties for modern engine operation. Synthetic oils are chemically produced. These man-made oils provide better fuel economy, reduced friction, lower viscosity at low temperatures and higher viscosity at high temperatures. Engine Oil Properties Engine oil must Promote circulation. Lubricate without foaming. Reduce friction and wear. Prevent rust and corrosion formation. Cool engine parts. Keep internal engine parts clean. Engine Oil Service ratings The American Petroleum Institute (API) has developed service classifications for engine oil. Engine Oil Viscosity Viscosity is the oil ability to flow. Temperature affects the oils viscosity. Hot oil flows faster than cold oil. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has developed a numeric classification system for engine oil. A heavier weight oil will have a higher number rating than a thinner oil. The SAE rating appears in the API s
