Unit Nine  Affirmation and Negation in Translation (正说反译法、反说正译法)  Ⅰ. Lead-in  There exists interchanging of affirmative and negative expressing both in Chinese and English. In translating, some affirmative words, phrases or even sentences in the English language may be put into negative ones in Chinese and vice versa.  Affirmation or Negation aims at: 1. making the meaning clearer 2. strengthening the rhetorical effect 3. making translated text conform to the idiomatic use of the target language  e.g. 1. Stop lying, Dalai Lama! (正说)  达赖喇嘛，不要再撒谎了！ （反译） 2. “Don’t stop running,” he said. (反说) 他说：“继续跑吧。” （ 正译） 3. Excuse me. (正说) 对不起。 (反译) 4. 请勿大声喧哗！ （反说）  Keep quiet! (正译) 1.Affirmative Expressing Turned into Negative Expressing in E-C Translation( 英译汉中的正说反译法)   By turning affirmative expressing into negative one in English-Chinese translating, we mean, English sentences bearing no negative adverbs such as no , not and never or structures with words having no suffix or prefix such as de-, dis-, im-, in-, un-, mal-, -less, etc. are put into Chinese sentences or structures having negative adverbs such as “不”, “非”, “无”, “莫”，“勿” “没有”, “未”, “否”, etc. 1.1. Verb① A: When?  B: If the weather holds a couple of days.  甲：什么时候起飞 ？  乙：要是天气三两天内保持不变，就可以。 ② The first bombs missed the target.  第一批炸弹没有击中目标。③ Such a chance was denied me.  我没有得到这样一个机会。 1.2. Adverb①We may safely say so.  我们这样说万无一失（或：错不了）。② A：She is as beautiful as Helen.  B: Exactly. 甲：她貌若天仙。 乙：一点儿不假。 ③The subversion attempts proved predictably futile. 不出所料，颠覆活动证明毫无效果。④Adults Only. 少儿不宜。⑤Admission by Invitation Only. 非请莫入。⑥Keep Upright! 1.3.
