The history of Father’s Day began in 1909 in Washington. A young girl named Sonora Smart Dodd heard a Mother’s Day sermon. The sermon inspired her to have a special day dedicated to her father. Her father, William Jackson Smart, raised her brothers and sisters all along after her mother passed away. She loved her father and she realized that he was special. She decided she wanted to let him know how she was thankful for his love. She had the first Father’s Day celebration on 19th of June 1910. She chose that day because it was her father’s birthday. The idea soon caught on and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. In 1926, a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City.
