Beijing Hutong Exploring Beijing Hutong Beijings narrow alleyways, or hutongs are most representative of the old Beijing. For hundreds of years, theyve witnessed the passage of time. A hutong is an ancient city alley, typical of Beijing. The centuries-old lanes have developed into a hot tourist attraction during the holiday season. Surrounding the Forbidden City, many of the hutongs were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Rich Culture of the Hutong The various hutongs, with their unique shape, size, and functions all reflect their deep cultural legacy(遗产).Thanks to Beijing’s long history and status as capital for six dynasties, almost every hutong has its own anecdotes(奇闻轶事), and some are even associated with historic events. In contrast to the court life and elite(精华) culture represented by the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven, the hutongs reflect the culture of grassroots Beijingers. Hutongs′ evolvement in modern time In the fifth episode of our hutong series, we′ll follow Yin Chen to see how hutongs have evolved in the modern time, and have developed new functions, while preserving their traditional qualities. Nanluguxiang 南锣鼓巷is one of the best persevered areas in Downtown Beijing. It used to be famous for its hutong and courtyards, but today, it is also famed for the cafés, bars, clothing and handicraft shops that line its hutong lanes. Along this 768-meter-long hutong, there are more than 50 such shops. Unlike the streets of other purely commercial areas, bars and cafes here are quieter, providing less-expensive food and drink and more importantly, most of them are decorated in a traditional Chinese style that matches their surroundings.
