The two main characters, Dean Moriarty, Sal Paradise, the restless young men cross and recross America by hitchhike or self-driving from 1947 to 1950, searching for parties, girls, drugs, loneliness and their own dreams along the way.. Dean is the soul existence among these Beats, so the paper will dominantly analyses Dean, including his characters, his friendships and his romance (Maybe it can’t be counted as romance.) through temporal social background, Dean’s living environment. By the elaborate analysis of Dean, hope we can make ourselves understand the Beat Generation and get out of the present confusion. Key Words: On the Road; Dean Moriarty; Beat; characters Plot The film begins in 1947 with Sal Paradise walking on a road before the truck stops and lets him on; he makes quick friends and jokes around with the men in the back of the truck. Back to five months ago, on the day his father was buried, his friend Chad brought him to a somber and incapacious apartment to meet Dean Moriarty and his 16-year-old wife Marylou. Here is the scene Sal saw: Marylou is lying naked on the bed and she is not ashamed at all and behaves naturally. Soon Sal befriends Dean, smoking marijuana insanely with him and visiting a jazz nightclub. Dean gets a job as a chauffeur. Dean has to ask for residing with Sal after Marylou sold apartment and left for Denver (Her money is from sex). Sal teaches Dean how to write. Then another friend, Carlo Marx leaves with Dean for Denver. S
