We use solvent refined paraffinic mineral oils as our base stocks. The process makes use of solvents which preferentially dissolve one of the groups in the oil usually the aromatics . The oil is mixed thoroughly with the solvent and then allowed to settle. Two layers or phases are formed – the lower layer consists of the dissolved components and the upper layer, of the undissolved components. Both layers are chemically unchanged as the process only involves a physical separation. After separation, the solvent is then recovered by distillation.
