Acetylene cylinders are filled with a porous material and saturated with liquid acetone. Acetylene, when pumped into the cylinder, dissolves in the acetone and is held in a stable condition. If the acetylene cylinder is stored or used in the horizontal position, the acetone may leak out, leaving an explosive mixture of acetylene.
