Conclusion References Acknowledgements Abstract Emma is one of Jane Austen’s masterpieces，in which Austen portrayed Emma as a young, pretty and smart gentlewoman, yet she was not a perfect or flawless character. She is selfish and snobbish, conservative and opinionated, conceited and meddling, lazy and jealous. These character flaws make Emma biased for low status. She has only a friend, Miss Taylor. Her life is dull and she is even unable to confront his feelings for Mr. Knightley. This paper will give a detailed analysis of Emma’s flaws. We will also find out the three major factors that cause these character flaws, which are family background, conservative lifestyle and social phenomenon. Although Emma has a variety of character flaws, in the 19th century, selfishness and snobbishness, conservatism and conceit of British society is the fundamental cause of Emma’s character defects. Thus, through Emma and the surrounding people’s behavior, Jane Austen reveals the social reality of British society in the nineteenth century, that is, people judge each other by their
