Talk about the cultural information
In this class, we are going to learn the cultural values and learn how to communicate with each other better.
The characteristics of collectivism:
1 Collective cultures see the group as the most important social entity.
2 Belonging to organization is emphasized. The individual is emotionally dependent on organizations and institutions. People expect to look after other members of their in-group in need and expect their group to look after them.
3 It emphasizes the views, needs and goals of the in-group rather than oneself. Collectivists value harmony and avoid direct confrontation.
4 It emphasizes common interests, conformity, cooperation, and interdependence.
5 Direct confrontation is considered rude in collectivist cultures.
Power Distance
Uncertainty avoidance
High-Uncertainty avoidance cultures try to avoid uncertainty and ambiguity by providing stability for their members, establishing more formal rules. In culture with high uncertainty avoidance, people have a low tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity.
Cultures of low uncertainty avoidance tend to have less concern about uncertainty and ambiguity and more tolerance for a variety of options. People from low uncertainty avoidance countries do not have a strong need to control things, people, and events by clearly defining and categorizing them.
Masculinity vs. Femininity
High masculinity cultures believe in achievement and ambition, in judging people on the basis of their performance, and in the right to display the material goods that have been acquired. In high masculinity societies, people tend to believe that matters of material comfort, social privilege, access to power and influence, status and prestige, and ability to consume are related to ability.
