The author compares and analyses the origin and the status quo of differences between Chinese and Western cultures, illustrates the necessity of a comparative study for translation, and indicates that the same color idioms may have different meanings in different cultures. The author finds three rules of translation between English and Chinese color idioms by means of analyzing the color idioms of red, white and black. They are1) the English color idioms are translated into Chinese idioms with the same color word; 2) the Chinese color idioms are translated into English idioms with different or no color word; and 3) the English color idioms are translated into Chinese idioms with different or no color word. By illustrating plenty of examples, the author expounds and proves that only have we understood the differences of color idioms in different cultures we can translate these color idioms correctly and effectively.
