A Brief Study on the Enigmatic Language and the Application in Chinese Literature 　　摘要：从语言艺术欣赏角度来看，一部优秀的文学作品，往往有多层次的意蕴。在浅显而易于了解和把握的表层意义之下，隐约蕴藏着不经仔细推敲难于探知的深层内涵，这就是隐语。语言中的隐语现象，便是语言和社会之间密切关系的生动反映之一。本文旨在利用隐语定义并用中国古典文学中对隐语的运用分析隐语的特点。 　　关键词：隐语 文学作品 古典 　　Language， the tool of human thought， is the significant intermediate of social communication and information transmission. It was born in the society and develops as the society varies. The phenomenon of the enigmatic language is one of the vivid reflections of the close relationship between language and the society， which exists everywhere in our lives so that we can hardly live without it. 　　Ⅰ. The Definition of the Enigmatic Language 　　The enigmatic language was called enigma（?辞） in ancient China which is used to conceal the meaning of vague words by euphemistic metaphor and indicate the meaning hidden by vivid and lively interpretation. The word enigmatic language first appeared in History of Han Dynasty ?Dong Fangshuo： （郭舍人受东方朔出继戏弄后），舍人不服，因曰：“臣愿复问，朔隐语，不知，亦当榜。”The enigmatic language here means “to borrow other words to hint instead of telling the original meaning directly”. So it is clear that from the time of the Western Han Dynasty， the enigmatic language has boarded the stage of the history， although the enigmatic language at that time was an expression of art in a funny way， then developed into codes to transform information， at last became interesting riddles. As the development of time and the need of social life， the enigmatic language became mature， the symbol of which was the appearance of the professional essays studying on the enigmatic language. The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons written by the Southern Dynasty Liu Xie is the first monograph on literary theories， among which “Banter” systematical and theoretical research was laid on the enigmatic language. “?者，隐也。遁辞以隐意，谲譬以指事也。” 　　Ⅱ.
