Sociolinguistics ① Xiao Long-Fu Applied Linguistics Programme School of Foreign Languages SDNU 01-26-2013 ① Course Introduction Course Description The course provides a systematic overview of sociolinguistic development, and all the research areas and topics. Key sociolinguistic theories, concepts, and social factors that contribute to foreign/second language teaching/learning are identified and applied in analyzing data by learners themselves. Field works are encouraged during the course work to strengthen the students’ ability to conduct actual sociolinguistic or applied linguistic research. Assumed Background This course is an introduction to theories, concepts, methodology and the major issues in Sociolinguistics. No specific background is assumed or required, but students with experience in Applied Linguistics, foreign language learning/teaching may find the course of particular interest Aims objectives This course has three goals: ① To foster an understanding of the principles, processes, variables that govern and influence the language variation, and change; ②To develop the ability to think critically about research findings in the field. Research is a dynamic process, in which today’s understandings give way to tomorrow’s insight. You will be encouraged to take an inquiring and analytic approach to the readings and lecture materials; ③ To understand the relationship between sociolinguistic research and foreign/second language instruction cross-cultural communication. Insight into the basic process social factors involved in language variation and change will serve as a source of understanding for reflective teaching practice and cross-cultural communication Learning objectives After successfully completing this course you should be able to: ①Understand the current issues in the field of Sociolinguistics from a Chinese International perspective; ②Identify and address problems and come up with creative solutions to current issues in Sociol
