PRIMARY CURRICULUM POLICY GUIDANCE FOR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
INTRODUCTION AND SUBJECT DEFINITION
The headings used in this guidance have been agreed by the Advisory Service as common headings which can be used in all policies. However particular schools have an agreed format for all policies within the school, and you should seek guidance on whether this is the case in your school before beginning to write any school policy. The process of writing a policy is more important than the finished document. This guidance should allow the co-ordinator to prepare a draft for discussion at a staff meeting.
Usually a statement about how the subject requires the application of skills and knowledge to solve practical problems in response to human needs. Technology can be defined as:
“ the application of scientific and other knowledge to practical tasks by organisations that involve people and machines” What is Technology by J Naughton
It is appropriate to list here the school’s own beliefs and philosophy for this subject.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
These should reflect the school’s aims and values.
Aims should include mention of:
? the child’s development in creative and evaluative thinking and the range of materials they will experience
? skill development
? equal opportunities: particularly in relation to gender and awareness of technology in other cultures
? health and safety
? the opportunities for social skills development in group work and cooperation
Objectives should grow from the aims and are really a fuller explanation of how the aims are going to be achieved, ensure that you have a match between the two.
More detailed teaching objectives will appear in the units of work.
Curriculum Organisation
How the subject is going to be delivered, by the classroom teacher as part of timetabled curriculum time, on a particular afternoon when helpers are available or during a prolonged DT week/period of Project activity at a pre determined time in the academic year. If you have a
