Geography American Life and Culture Elizabeth Atchley The US is bigger than China or Brazil and is nearly a third the size of all of Africa. It takes about the same length of time to fly from New York to Los Angeles as it does to fly from New York to London. The US contains nearly 300 million people. The size and population affects every phase of life. It creates a highly competitive domestic market for goods (and constant advertising) and an equally competitive political arena. Marked differences in geography and weather and widely dispersed ethnic heritages naturally affect people’s attitudes. Living in the USA, Alison R. Lanier, Revised by Jef C. Davis There are four different time zones between the two coasts. Alaska extends even farther west and adds an additional two time zones. Hawaii is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It adds yet another time zone (an hour different from Alaska). Some of the islands that are a part of Alaska share the time zone with Hawaii. Davis The world’s date line is halfway around the world from zero meridian, that is 12 hours away from Greenwich, on the 180th meridian. East of this imaginary line, the calendar is a day earlier than points west of it .
