British Literature British Literature III Popular Ballads 1 Ballad 1 the most important of English folk literature; 2 It is a folk song or orally transmitted poem telling in a direct way and dramatic manner some popular stories usually in local history or legend. 3 The story is told simply, impersonally, and often with vivid dialogues. 4 It is often composed in quatrains with alternating 4-stress and 3-stress lines, and the 2nd the 4th lines rhymed. The English ballads flourished in the 12th to the 15th century. In this period, while the nobility were amusing themselves with romances, the common folks were expressing their interest and ideals in poetry much simpler in form and more genuine in sentiment.
