chapt 9 Stylistic Analysis of Poetry

0. Revision of style as foregrounding What is stylistics? How is style realized? Stylistics is the study of literary language through the means of linguistics. Briefly speaking, style means foregrounding, which is realized through deviation and overregularity. Deviation is further classified into surface-structure deviation (phonological, graphological, syntactic, and lexical deviation) and deep-structure deviation (contradiction, transference, deception and ambiguity) while overregularity into phonological overregularity (phonemic patterning and rhythmic patterning) and syntactic overregularity (repetition, parallelism and regression). 1. Importance of the appreciation and stylistic analysis of poetry Poetry is one of the most important literary genres from whose reading we can get a lot of aesthetic and intellectual pleasure. The analysis of the poetic stylistic features and their effects can help us to appreciate poems better and promote our ability of stylistic analysis of literature of other genres. 2. The three aspects of poetic analysis We can analyze a poem or part of a poem from the following three aspects: i. Relevant information about the poem The title of the poem; The name of the poet; The period in which the poem was written (either the date, for example, the mid-eighteenth century, or a name, for example, the Elizabethan period); The genre to which the poem belongs (for example, whether it is lyric, dramatic, epic, sonnet, elegy or satire – these categories are not mutually exclusive; a lyric poem can also be a sonnet); The topic (for example, whether it is a love poem, a war poem or a nature poem) 3) Semantic and grammatical features Semantic features: literal use of language, with no figurative uses Grammatical features: marked theme in line 5; use of simple present tense (with a vivid describing effect); use of imperative sentence (helping to produce an effect of distance between the poet and the lass) 4. Summary From the above
