Coordinate Systems_Projections_Datums

Peters projection is a cylindrical equal-area projection that de-emphasizes area exaggerations in high latitudes by shifting the standard parallels to 45 or 47 degrees Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection Not a single map projection. Divides surface of the Earth into 6 degree longitudinal strips extending from 80 degrees South latitude to 84 degrees North latitude. Each mapped by the Transverse Mercator projection with a central meridian in the center of the zone. Azimuthal equidistant projections used to show air-route distances. Distances measured from the center are true. Distortion of other properties increases away from the center point. Albers Equal Area Conic A conic projection that distorts scale and distance except along standard parallels. Areas are proportional and directions are true in limited areas. Used in the United States and other large countries with a larger east-west than north-south extent. Albers Equal Area Conic Used by USGS for maps showing the conterminous United States (48 states) or large areas of the United States. Well suited for large countries or other areas that are mainly east-west in extent and that require equal-area representation. Used for many thematic maps. All areas on the map are proportional to the same areas on the Earth. Shows area accurately but distorts shape. Presented by H. C. Albers in 1805. Conic—Mathematically projected on a cone conceptually secant at two standard parallels. Lambert Conformal Conic A conformal conic projection. A USGS favorite for maps of the US. Presented by Johann Heinrich Lambert (1728-1777) of Alsace in 1772. When you add a layer in ArcMap it displays the coordinate values of the features-geographic or projected. Chapter 3 Projecting shapefiles Projections give your data the correct shape area direction distance Defining the datum, projection, and coordinate system for data ensures that the geography is reflected properly.
