Clauses and Sentences…Fragments and Run-on Sentences Words to Remember Noun: person, place, thing, or idea Subject: noun that is the focus of the sentence Verb (predicate)?: action or state of the subject Pronouns (he, she, it, they, we, I, me, this, that)? Clause: a group of words that have a subject and a verb but can be connected to other phrases. Example: this sentence has two clauses. Jane likes eating ice cream, but John thinks it is too sweet. Avoid Repeating the Subject In English, a subject should only be used once in a clause Do not follow the subject with a pronoun Incorrect: My friend, he is going to the game. Correct: My friend is going to the game. Correct: He is going to the game. Is the following sentence correct? My parents, they have come to Sias. Complete Sentences Each verb requires a certain number of nouns “talk” requires 1 noun: “She talks.” “say” requires 2 nouns: “She says something.” “put” requires 3 nouns: “She put the book there.” Learn the number of nouns for each verb! Always include the pronoun to make a complete sentence. (exception: commands)? It is raining Nana came. She is in the other room. There is a lot of room here for improvement. Include Pronouns and Linking Verbs In Chinese, sometimes you can leave out the pronoun or the linking verbs What is a linking verb? (all the forms of “be”)? In English, you must always have both. It is very expensive. Examples: Incorrect: I like your skirt. Is very beautiful. Incorrect: I have a new dog. It very lovely. A sentence: a single clause or a combination of clauses; marked by a Capital lett
