3. What lessons can we draw from the poem? ?The wild can also be beautiful. Everyone should take an active attitude toward life. never avoid challenges for fear of losing something. One can’t achieve anything under the shelter and protection. Fair flowers that does comely grow, a Hid in this silent dull retreat, b Untouched thy honied blossoms blow, a Unseen thy little branches great; b No roving foot shall crush thee here, c No busy hand provoke a tear. c ? Assignment: Read another two poems on p.46 and p.49 * More about his works: Freneau heralded American literary independence. His literary work was a fusion of neoclassicism and romanticism. His patriotic and political poems, even when “full of invective and loaded with spleen” had used the diction, poetic forms, landscapes, mythologies and deistic thought of the 18th century. Yet his poetry also exhibited the lyric qualities: the sensuous images and adulation of nature and primitivism that became the conventions of American romanticism in the next century. He was at his best in his so-called pre-romantic verses an
