Section 17 The International Federation of Surveyors Commission Six: Positioning and Measurement ABSTRACT: This paper describes Commission Six (Engineering Surveys) of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG). The Commission is defined and its primary areas of interest are described. This is the seventh in a series of articles on FIG commissions. The intention behind this series is to provide a comprehensive overview of the FIG, its structure and its goals, and describe how these goals are being pursued by members and their representatives on the Federations various commissions. INTRODUCTION The technical and professional work of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) is performed by nine commissions whose existence, assignments, and duration are determined by the General Assembly. The commissions are made up of delegates from member associations and affiliates who may each assign one delegate to each commission. Each commission is led by a chair and a vice chair both of whom are elected by the General Assembly for a term of four years, the vice chair normally succeeding to the office of Chair following the chairs four-year term. At the beginning of each four-year cycle each commission submits a plan of work to the General Assembly, which details the commissions objectives and tasks. At the end of each chairs term he or she submits a comprehensive report to the General Assembly on the accomplishments of the commission with regard to its plan of work. The commissions work plans address the technical and professional aims of the FIG Strategic Plan. The commissions thus collectively cover all the activities listed in the FIG definition of a surveyor, while also anticipating and responding to market trends and client needs.
