2. Phrases:
declare war on, be known as, attempt to do sth, so…that, make a breakthrough, pick up, be situated on, make contributions to…
3. Sentences:
⑴More than 5,000 ships crossed the English Channel, carrying130,000 troops to the French coast.
⑵If they had reached the beach, they would probably have been killed.
⑶The survivors lay on the beach, exhausted and shocked.
⑷The cemetery and memorial are situated on a cliff overlooking the beach and the English Channel, from where the boats attempted their landings
