Putting this course in context Where are you from? How did you get here? Why are you in this class? What is your goal of doing this course? How will this course run? Small numbers mean this course will run in seminar mode No long lectures No tutorials Video presentations Readings and exercises Flexible learning schemes Interactivity and learning styles are different i.e. I speak for a bit you do some exercises etc This starts next week Readings Readings are weekly journal papers in electronic format Why? Why not! No textbooks means you save money and I can find most good quality journal papers in pdf format. IS THIS ILLEGAL? You need to read these readings each week because we will be answering questions in class about them All readings are under course content on the web Assessment Items Stakeholder analysis (40%) Analysis and discussion of stakeholders in the use of social media during the floods Final Exam (40%) Three parts Short Answer Case Studies – where you make recommendations Long Answer Multiple Choice A governance problem Reflective Journal (20%) You will be given a topic to reflect on and write about to capture your learning about the course. Seminar Format This week is an exception… normally 15 minute introduction Video or Exercise 30-45 mins Break for 10 mins 15 minutes to the next section Exercise Break for 10 mins 15 minutes etc… Consultation … you get the point ? Thursday before class (4-6pm) in N50 1.35 What will I get from this course? A solid knowledge of how to apply thinking to solve policy problems An understanding of contemporary policy problems
