A Letter to a teacher 1842 Merida Street Victoria,B.C. Canada V8N 5C9 October 3,1999 Dear Mr Ney Thompson I arrived at Pearson [皮而逊] College in Victoria[维多利亚], British Columbia, in late August. Pearson College is a small school, quite different from University of Toronto in Ontario[安大略省], which is huge and famous. I could have gone to the University of Toronto, but I chose this school for its small size and its excellent program in my major field---linguistics. My class started a few weeks ago, and I enjoy them very much. I’m taking four courses: English, applied linguistics, mathematics and psychology. There aren’t many students in my linguistics class, and the professor often gives us individual instruction during his office hours. He is a kind old man with great learning. Though busy with my studies, I find time to play on the soccer team. I’ve made friends with a Canadian student, whose name is Robert Wilson. We study together in the library or go for walks on the campus. Robert, who is majoring in elementary education, is one of the many college students who give free lessons to children of poor families in a city nearby. Like nearly half of my classmates, I have a scholarship that pays part of my college expenses. I work as a language lab assistant to help pay other bills. My plan for the future is to teach English for a few years in a university, and then to devote my life to research in linguistics. How was your vacation? How many students are you teaching now?
