At this time oil was used to polish swords and armour. Egyptian records also suggest that oil was used to grease the axles of their chariots. Oil was one of the elements of the famous “Greek Fire” which was used as an incendiary mixture. Romans took the knowledge from the Greeks and used oil as a weapon in their conquests. They also gave it the name petroleum, which comes from the Latin words petra, meaning rock, and oleum, meaning oil.
