An Analysis of English Linguistic Imperialism by Class: Student Number: Under the Supervision of Professo Jan. 2015 An Analysis of English Linguistic iImperialism Abstract: Culture is the sprit and support of a nation and language is a special carrier of culture. Nowadays, English linguistic imperialism is threatening the linguistic diversity and cultural pluralism. We should envisage it’s negative effect and pay attention to protecting our national language and culture, at the same time, we should take a compatible attitudes towards English and Chinese, strengthen the communication between Chinese and Western language and culture. English is a language tool by which we can learn more about the world, however, as a Chinese, we have the obligation to popularize Chinese. Key words: linguistic imperialism; English linguistic imperialism; negative effect; protection of Chinese Introduction 1.1 A Brief Introduction to Linguistic Imperialism Linguistic imperialism can be defined as the promulgation of global ideologies through the worldwide expansion of one language(Dai, 2013:115). 1.2 A Brief Introduction to English Linguistic Imperialism English linguistic imperialism is a sub-type of linguicism (Phillipson,1992). According to Crystal, English is not only the mother tongue of Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and some South African countries, but also the official language used by over 70 countries worldwide. More than 100 countries over the world, including China, have chosen English as prior foreign language to learn(Crystal,1996:130-134). According to Jiang, Among the 6 billion people, about 0.38 billion of them has taken English as their mother tongue; about 0.25 billion of them used English as the second language; 1 billion of them are learning English and 2 billion are contacting English.
