Objectivity Generally speaking, Chinese writing is very personal. It is something the writer cares deeply about. The Chinese writer spends a great deal of effort telling the readers how he feels, wanting the readers to feel the same way. The Chinese writers write from inside of the event or issue. The Chinese writer is more likely to use more descriptive terms and words showing a greater degree of emotion than the westerner. The western writer is more objective. His readers would say, “Don’t tell me how you feel, tell me what happened. I will decide how I feel.” The westerner is an observer and stands outside of the event as he writes. e.g. A true friend helps you when you are in trouble. It is the warmth of winter. It is an umbrella in the rain. Friendship is not personal wealth but common possession. In writing, westerners emphasize creativity and individualism. Freshness and originality are praised. Chinese value models and imitation in writing. Example essays are faithfully copied with some words or phrases changed to fit the topic. This is called plagiarism or claiming someone else’s work as one’s own. In persuasive writing, Chinese are more militant in their language and tone. The imperative is much more common. Phrases such as “we must…” “you should…” or “absolutely…” are frequently seen.
