Be aware of cultural differences is not only a cultural learning but also a personal experience enrichment. Culture Shock The ancient Chinese philosopher Sun Tzu says in The Art of War: “He who has a thorough knowledge of himself and the enemy is bound to win in all battles. He who knows himself but not the enemy has only an even chance of winning. He who knows not himself and the enemy is bound to perish in all battles” Culture Shock The term culture shock is used to describe the anxiety incurred when a person moves to a new environment, expressing the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. Culture Shock Many things contribute to it－ smells, sounds, flavors, the very feeling of the air one is breathing. Of course, the natives’ unfamiliar language and behavior contribute to it, too.
