Student Essays to Consider (学生习作分析) Adopting a Handicap (1) My church recently staged a “Sensitivity Sunday” to make our congratulation more aware of the problems faced by people with physical disabilities. We were asked to “adopt a disability” for several hours one Sunday morning. Some members, like ma, chose to use wheelchairs. Others wore sound-blocking earplugs(耳塞), hobbled(跛行;蹒跚) around on crutches(拐杖), or wore blindfolds(蒙眼的绷带[布等];障眼物). (2) Just sitting in the wheelchair was instructive I had never considered before how awkward it would be to use one. As soon as I sat down, my weight made the chair begin to roll. Its wheels were not locked, and I fumbled(乱摸,摸索) clumsily to correct that. Another awkward moment occurred when I realized I had no place to put my feet. I fumbled some more to turn the metal footrest(脚凳) into place. I felt psychologically awkward as well, as I took my footrest uneasy look at what was to be my only means of transportation for several hours. I realized that for many people, “adopting a wheelchair” is not a temporary experiment. That was a sobering(冷静) thought as I sank back into my seat. (3) Once I sat down, I had to learn how to cope with the wheelchair. I shifted around, trying to find a comfortable position. I thought it might be restful, even kind of nice, to be pushed around for a while. I glanced around to see who would be pushing me and then realized I would have to navigate(驾驶;航行) the contraption(奇妙的装置,新发明) by myself! My palms reddened and my wrist and forearm(前臂) muscles started to ache as I tugged(用力拉,使劲拉) at the heavy metal wheels. I realized, as I veered(改变) this way and that, that steering and turning were n
