Metaphysical poets John Donne The Flea “Metaphysical Poets”(玄学派诗人) The Metaphysical poets were a loose group of British lyric poets of the 17th century, who shared an interest in metaphysical concerns and a common way of investigating them. Their rigorous严密的, energetic verse appeals to the reader’s intellect rather than emotions, discarding intuition and mysticism in favour of rational discussion. The most frequently used poetic technique is “conceit(奇喻)”. The leading poets of this school are Andrew Marvell, George Herbert, Richard Crashaw Henry Vaughan, all of whom wrote under the influence of John Donne.
