* Unlike virtually all other proposals for a block-cipher-based hash function, Whirlpool uses a block cipher that is specifically designed for use in the hash function and that is unlikely ever to be used as a standalone encryption function. The reason for this is that the designers wanted to make use of an block cipher with the security and efficiency of AES but with a hash length that provided a potential security equal to SHA-512.
