The CPU is used in comprehensive automation structures which contain distributed I/O structures in addition to the central I/O. The CPU 317 possesses a combined MPI/DP interface configurable as a DP master or slave. The CPU 317-2 DP has a PROFIBUS DP interface as a second interface which can also be configured as a master or slave. However, the two interfaces cannot be used simultaneously as the master. The CPU 317-2 PN/DP has an Ethernet/PROFInet interface as a second interface. The CPUs are just 80 mm wide, thus saving 50% mounting space compared to a CPU 318. Micro memory cards (MMC) up to 8 MB can be used, permitting even larger STEP 7 projects to be saved on the MMC. The MMC is additionally maintenance-free and provides data retention without a backup battery. A convenient grounding slide permits easy selection of floating or non-floating operation, depending on the application.
