The Cover Letter Cover Letters Similar in purpose to resumes Must grab employer’s attention Must highlight how you can help company Prepare original letter for each employer Cover Letters Develop expand on info in your resume Should capture reader’s attention Must be an effective advertisement of you Introduce qualities you want to promote Should: Stress your potential value to company Invite an in-depth reading of your resume 3 Basic Sections Each section has a specific purpose: Paragraph 1 Should identify: Job for which you are applying Why you are interested in job How you heard about job/who told you about the job Paragraph 2 Generates reader interest in you by: Referring to important points of resume Adding additional information that applies to desired position Paragraph 3 Makes request to employer for an interview Normally scheduled with follow-up telephone call Should be short, positive assertive (not aggressive) Tips Best to use simple straightforward language Be direct concise Typically includes the following components: Writer’s return address Date Employer’s name address (inside address) Salutation Body (usually 3-4 paragraphs) Complimentary closing Writer’s name signature Enclosure notation (when appropriate) Dos Use the same color, paper, and font you used in your resume. Address your cover letter to a specific individual or hiring authority . Limit your cover letter to three or four paragraphs and not more than one page . Check for typos, proper grammar, and accuracy. Reformat and use for email applications. Don’ts Use a generic, “one size fits all” cover letter . You should write a cover letter that is targeted to a specific job/organization. Write a long, wordy cover letter; one page in length is adequate. Use the cover letter to expand upon skills and experiences beyond information contained in your resume. Exaggerate your skills or experience. Evaluation only.
