* * * * * * * * Argon gas in general is used to maintain and create the plasma. On older systems Argon gas has to be used also for optic purge to provide a good transmission to avoid absorbance of UV emission lines. The Argon gas purity always should be better then 99.998% that means we allow 20ppm of impurities in order to maintain a proper plasma. If the instrument is used every day for some hours then you may consider about using a Liquid Argon tank if your gas supplier can provide such a tank. Liquid Argon provides the best gas quality at all. The gas Volume of a 150Ltr liquid Argon tank is equal to volume of about 15 high pressure gas cylinders. At newer series of our ICP spectrometer, since about 1 ? years, the systems are equipped with to 2 gas input lines. One for Argon gas to maintain the plasma and a second one for optic purge which can be either Argon or Nitrogen gas. This option will save running cost because Nitrogen gas is a lot cheaper then Argon gas but the quality of Nitrogen must be better the 4.8 which is equal of an impurity of 99.998% For the detector of our ICP Spectrometer also called Camera it is essential that it must be purged with very good quality of purge gas. To avoid impurities we recommend to leave the Gas input line and the pressure regulator connected to the tank all the time. It should be disconnected from the cylinder or tank only for short time when tank has to be replaced. The light sensitive area of the detector or camera is cooled to -40°C and any moisture in the purge gas will build ice crystal which may destroy the camera. If no purge gas pressure is present the camera cooler will be switched off for safety reason. To start in the morning turn purge gas ON and wait 20 min before starting Salsa or switching the Camera Cooler ON * This slide shows the original schematic of purge and plasma gas line.
