Why? Materials: mother gentle, amiable, sympathetic, kind; father decisive, wise, insightful, friend no generation gap, supportive etc. ■New English words and text The structure of the text: the passage is composed 5 parts, and the first part (paragraph 1) gives the background information of the story—the author’s relationship with her teacher and her feeling about her return to Hawaii. The second part (para 2-4) is a flashback about the clashes between the author and her father. The third part (para 5-6) is a transition. The author recalls her father’s affection for her in her childhood and shows her uncertainty about the forthcoming reunion. The forth part (para 7-13) describes the reunion —the initial uncertain moment, the father’s affection for his grandchild, and ease of the tension between the father and the daughter. The last part (para 14-15) is the conclusion, the ending of the story about how family ties work in removal of disagreement between family members. Listen to the passage paragraph 1-5, and answer to the following questions. [1-5] How did the author feel about her trip to Hawaii? How would you describe the relationship between the author and her father? What was the father’s attitude towards the author’s marriage? And what was the reason? How did the father express his disapproval? (She felt pretty uncertain and worried about what would happen, so she had more anxiety than joy.) (It seems that between the author and her father there was a gap which was caused by the father’s “particular demand” and the author’s “bullheadedne
