UK Nations Minorities (3) New Immigration Questions Is immigration a new phenomenon? How do immigrants fit in to the UK and why is it not called a ‘melting pot’* like the USA? Why is multiculturalism being questioned now? Post-war Immigration What was new? Anxieties over the integration of Moslem communities and rising immigration have led to a greater emphasis on ‘learning to be British’, tests for citizenship and islamophobia in the media. Task 3 Is Britain multicultural? In its race relations, to what extent is Britain similar or different to the USA? What is ‘islamophobia’ and why is multiculturalism being questioned now? * * * * *大熔炉 For the first time, large numbers of non-white immigrants arrived in the UK from the colonies and Commonwealth* countries after 1948 to do labouring jobs. Many faced open racial discrimination until it was made illegal in the mid 1960s and 70s, following riots** in 1958. **暴乱 * 英联邦 Multiculturalism (or Segregation*)?
