A Study on Language Learning Strategies 姓名: 高利桃 学号: 2010312429 时间: 2013年11月18日 A Study on Language Learning Strategies Introduction 1.1 A brief introduction English has been taught as a foreign language in China since the 1970s. With the opening policy and the development of the economy in China, many different theories about language acquisition and learning have been introduced to China from western countries. They contribute a lot to the education in China. The teachers study, reflect and apply them in their teachings. It must be pointed out that learning strategies have also been noticed. The language learning strategies can be further defined as the specific behaviors, steps, and actions taken to enhance one’s own learning, through the storage, retention, and use of new information about the target language. They are the conscious thoughts and behaviors used by learners with the explicit goal of improving their knowledge and understanding of a target language. They facilitate language learning tasks, represent goal-directed behaviors, and personalize the language learning process. Generally speaking, there are four types of strategies(Cohen, 2006, p. 15): cognitive strategies, meta-cognitive strategies, social strategies, affective strategies.In fact, learning strategies had existed before they were formally named and classified. Much research on learning strategies has been done.Oxford(1990) says appropriate strategies help learners to develop the four skill successfully and have more effective learning and result in improving proficiency and greater self-confidence. She also makes a classification on learning strategies. It demonstrates that learning strategies play an important role in language learning. 1.2 Objectives of the Paper This paper will discuss the frequency of the strategies
