Small changes in decibel levels can have appreciable effects on noise perception. Increasing noise by 10 dB(A) is the same as doubling the noise. A decrease of 3 dB(A) is the same as moving the receiver twice the distance from the source of the noise. Noise walls are a popular solution to roadway noise, especially in urban areas, but: 1) They are expensive, costing up to $25,000 to $50,000/ affected home. 2) They won’t work if a home or business is located within the line-of-sight of the roadway. 3) They do not treat the noise at its source, so the generation of the noise remains.
