Chapter one: Description and Backgrounds“Nineteenth-Century Britain” is a book which is about a short introduction of British history in the 19th century. Keywords are crisis and revolution. As a result of rapid development of industrialization, democratization and urbanization, the loyal and sincere adherent of traditional liberalism, Britain, was confronted with a series of crises and challenges. The book makes a gorgeous analysis of the process that Britain deleted with those crises and issues without any revolutions and few disputes, which, undoubted, ought to be used for reference when it comes to the problems on modernization and urbanization in the contemporary era in China. “Golden Years” of 19th century Britain is Victorian Era. Victoria became queen in 1837 at age 18. Her long reign until 1901 saw Britain reach the zenith of its economic and political power. Exciting new technologies such as steam ships, railroads, photography, and telegraphs appeared, achieving a world much faster-paced. Britain again remained mostly inactive in continental politics, and it did not fall within the wave of revolutions in 1848. The Victorian era saw the fleshing out of the second British Empire. Scholars debate whether the Victorian period—as defined by a variety of sensibilities and political concerns that have been linked to the Victorians—actually begin with her coronation or the earlier passage of the Reform Act 1832. The era led up to the Regency era and succeeded by the Edwardian period. The Great London Exhibition of 1851 clearly demonstrated Britains dominance in engineering and industry; that lasted until the rise of the United States and Germany in the 1890s. Old ideas were changed, not swept away, and new ideas gradually took place. The changes forever change city life, social class structure, the power of the British nation amongst others of the world, the production of machinery, and the strength of the economy of Britain.
