The ruling classes ignored the sufferings of the masses, wallowing in luxurious life. Especially in the closing years of Qing Dynasty, most of Chinese officials were selfish and corrupted. China lost the war against Japan in 1895, which dealt a heavy blow on the empire and the scholars who were considered patriotic groups. The scholars thought that the “inferior” Japan had become strong through westernization and that was why the Japanese had won the war. China was sick, in urgent need of nourishment. To help their country to be prosperous, Chinese scholars had translated many books of western countries, scientific, literary, political, and academic… Their nation became the most important thing to them. If ever their nation were nation no more, they would be turned into slaves of the invaders. So they tried their best to introduce western science, technology and anything linked with western culture into China. Politicians or writers, all intellectuals turned their attention to translation with different aims. In 1898, Yan Fu had his translated work Evolution and Ethics published, which made a stir in China and influenced the politics. With scientific persuasion of Darwinism and Yan Fu’s comments, the book left deep impression on Chinese people. It told that the weak would be beaten by the strong, and that Chinese—a yellow race would follow the steps of the red race in America and the black race in Africa to be enslaved, if they remained indifferent
